Spanish Mackerel
Spanish Mackerel
Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus) are another species of pelagic fish that make their way into Rhode Island waters in the late summer and fall months. Like the bonito and false albacore, they are very fast and can be notoriously lure-shy. These macks have a set of small sharp teeth and sport beautiful yellow spots all over their green/white bodies.
I have only caught a handful of Spanish mackerel in Rhode Island as they are predominantly a southern fish, but their numbers seem to be increasing here in the Northeast every season. They are delicious to eat, I have had them a few times raw as sashimi and loved it. And with no bag limit in Rhode Island, you can keep as many as you want!
