About Me
My name is Jonny Rego, and I am a passionate fisherman and outdoorsman. Rhode Island has always been my home, I was born in the small town of Portsmouth where scenic beaches were just minutes away. Being surrounded by the ocean, I guess it was only a matter of time until I became addicted to fishing.
One of the most defining moments in my life came at the young age of seven, the first time I ever held a fishing rod. My grandfather took me and my brother out scup fishing on his boat “Just Kidding” with nothing but a pack of hotdogs and a few hooks. An interesting choice of bait for sure, but the second my first scup hit the deck, a lifelong passion for angling was ignited.
From there, my parents became very accustomed to dropping me off at various fishing spots on a weekly basis, rain or shine. From catching scup and snapper blues off of my grandfather’s dock, to fishing destroyed bridges for tautog, I slowly but surely began to learn more and more about Rhode Island’s fisheries and marine life.
Once I finally got my drivers license, the floodgates opened up. I became obsessed with finding productive fishing grounds, crazy feeding frenzies, and more specifically, catching big striped bass.
In 2019 I decided to start filming my fishing adventures, and my Youtube channel “Fishing With Jonny” was born. I tried to create entertaining yet realistic videos about fishing, showing the ups and downs that come with this sport. What started as a shot in the dark side project has now grown into numerous social media platforms with over 300,000 total subscribers.
I also began to delve into the art of ocean kayak angling, fishing from high end kayaks like Hobie and Old Town and am now a part of the Old Town fishing team. This has allowed me to explore new waters and fish in ways I did not think possible.
Fishing the Ocean State is a passion I share with many others, so from one angler to another thank you for visiting my website!
