I got word that Bonito were running heavy in late July, so I launched my kayak to investigate. My first couple trips resulted in skunkings or just bluefish, but on my third attempt I finally got some bonito to play ball.
I started off throwing epoxy jigs with mixed results, nearly 100 casts only yielded two fish. It wasn’t until I switched over to a Yozuri crystal minnow (similar to an X-Rap) that I started catching bonito consistently on the cast.
These bonito were on the smaller side, my biggest bone was maybe 4 pounds but it was really cool to catch and see these pelagic fish running so thick in July. I know some shore guys were catching them by the dozens, I have never caught/seen them so early. Hopefully this is a good sign for the fall run!
Damn bro
Such a pretty color!
