Sea Robin

Sea Robin

Northern Sea Robin (Prionotus carolinus) is a species of bottom fish that can be found all over the Atlantic Ocean. Odds are if you drop down a jig or a piece of bait to the ocean floor, you’ll eventually catch a sea robin. Some people describe them as flying fish, as they literally have two giant red wings that are almost the size of their bodies that extend outwards while they cruise the ocean floors looking for food. They also have hard spiky heads that make them not so easy to handle, and they will croak/bark loudly at you when taken out of the water.

These fish are aggressive, and I have had days where you can catch them by the dozens. Sometimes they take over certain areas and seem to outcompete all other species of bottom fish, and to be honest it can be quite annoying. But for their relatively small size they can fight pretty hard, and their unique look will make anyone who hasn’t seen them before do a double take. They are surprisingly tasty on the dinner plate and with no bag limits, sea robins can make a quick and easy dinner.
